Prior to joining the United States Navy Band in 1997, MUC Richard Reed earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Louisiana State University and his Master of Music degree from Florida State University. He was a student of Mark Ostoich and Eric Ohlsson. He has performed with orchestras in Jacksonville, Savannah, Charleston, Tallahassee and Baton Rouge. Chief Reed was a finalist in the 1988 MTNA Wurlitzer Collegiate Artists Competition, and a semifinalist in the 1986 IDRS Gillet Competition.
