ACADEMIC UPDATES

WHAT'S NEW FOR 2011-2012

Howard University recently completed an intense review of its academic programs. As such, the Board of Trustees has authorized the change of the Bachelor of Music Education program to now be administered as a concentration under the Bachelor of Music program, as a concentration in Music Education. The program content, requirements, and teaching certification awarded (DC) are unchanged by this transition in title. The Bachelor of Music (in Music Education) program remains an accredited, professional degree program under the National Association of Schools of Music.

Also authorized is the change of the Master of Music Education program to now be administered as a concentration under the Master of Music program. This program's content and requirements are also unchanged by this transition in title. The Master of Music (in Music Education) program remains an accredited, professional degree program under the National Association of Schools of Music.

The Department of Music has maintained its accreditation with the National Association of Schools of Music since 1944, when Howard University became the first institution accredited for music in the Washington, DC area.

Additionally, all curricula have been reviewed, resulting in a reduction of credit requirements for all undergraduate programs. The new schemes are marked "effective Fall 2011" and apply to all incoming students and former students returning (FSR) Continuning students have the option to adopt the new schemes. Please contact the Coordinators of individual programs for additional information.
